SAF is a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil-based jet fuel, developed to help reduce aviation CO₂ emissions. Although it accounted for only 0.53% of global jet fuel consumption in 2024, adoption is accelerating rapidly under increasing regulatory pressure and decarbonisation targets.

In Europe, ReFuelEU Aviation requires fuel suppliers to incorporate SAF into airport fuel supply, while ICAO has set a global ambition to reduce international aviation CO₂ emissions by 5% by 2030 through SAF and other cleaner aviation energies.
